Annual Meeting February 8, 2012(snow date 2/22) 6:00 Downstairs at the Springvale Library - Free and open to members and the public --Whoot Whoot for Owls!
- The program will be on NATIVE OWLS presented by the York Center for Wildlife.
According to the Chinese calendar, 2012 is the year of the Dragon, but it might also be know as the year of the Owl. Though Dragons are the stuff of myths & legends, so too are Owls. Ancient Greeks viewed the them as a symbol of wisdom & good fortune while the Romans associated Owls with impending disaster, so much so that simply hearing the hoot of an Owl meant impending death. Whatever the belief, Owls have facinated us all throughout history.
If you asked someone to name the species of Owls found in ME they would likely name the common 3 - Barred, Great-horned & Screech but really there are 10 species of Owls known to make their home in Maine. The ME Owl Monitoring Project, headed by Dave Potter from Unity College, is entering it's 12th year of surveying the state for Owls. http://www.owlpages.com/owls.php?location=USA
This is your chance to learn about where they live, what they eat, how they hunt & get to see live owls up close. The live Owls will be visiting us from their home, the Center for Wildlife, a rehabilitation & education facility, located in York, ME. This presentation is sure to engage kids & adults alike.
Following the presentation, members will have a short business meeting to hold elections and vote on some changes in the by-laws,(see by-laws page) this will be followed by refreshments.
On March 23, folks will have the opportunity to learn more about the ME Owl Monitoring Project. We will meet at the Anderson Learning Center, Bradeen St. Springvale - Lower Level classroom at 7:30pm. Come learn about survey techniques & learn the calls & sounds we listen for to identify owl species. After a short presentation we will be heading out into the woods of Shapleigh to try to calll a few Owls.
"FOREST WORKS!" - York County Working Forest Protection Project- Has been started!
