Three Rivers Land Trust is delighted to share that a new mile-long trail will open at the Marjorie Dunnells Chadbourne Preserve in the summer of 2026, made possible through an extraordinary combination of land donation and community support.
In early 2024, James Chadbourne generously donated 100 acres of forested land adjacent to Square Pond. Square Pond residents, together with the Square Pond Improvement Association, stepped forward to help raise the stewardship funds required to accept and care for this gift, ensuring the land could be permanently conserved and responsibly managed. We are deeply grateful for this shared commitment to protecting the pond, its surrounding forests, and the wildlife that depends on them.
The preserve is named in honor of Marjorie Dunnells Chadbourne, the beloved matriarch of the Chadbourne family, who passed away in 2014. A naturalist at heart, Marjorie cherished the world around her – especially the birds, wildflowers, and wildlife that thrived at her home in Shapleigh. It is a fitting legacy for a place that will now be enjoyed by generations to come.
Located along Apple Road and Town Farm Road, the preserve features two streams that flow into Square Pond and provide habitat for wild brook trout, as well as wetlands and upland forests dominated by native plant species. The property supports a rich array of wildlife, including deer, coyotes, raccoons, foxes, porcupines, and many bird species, from red-tailed hawks and turkeys to blue jays.
Since acquiring the property, Three Rivers Land Trust has constructed a 60-by-20-foot parking area, laid out and cleared the mile-long trail route, and begun building a bridge designed to protect the integrity of a perennial stream. Bridge supports and hand railings will be completed by early summer. Additional work planned for the coming year includes installation of a trailhead kiosk, invasive plant management, and continued trail improvements.
